Toyota Opens Export Market with Etios and Etios Liva

After over a decade of successful production in India, Toyota's Indian subsidiary, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is planning to export its Etios and Etios Liva models to South Africa. If you aren't familiar with the Etios line, the model is available in four-door sedan and hatchback variants and specifically tailored for India's market. Not only are these models expected to blossom in the South African market but their exportation would mark a significant growth in global reach for Toyota.

"Exporting the Etios to South Africa would also mean showcasing the advanced technology and superior quality features that have been developed by Toyota for Etios,"1 explains TKM Managing Director Hiroshi Nakagawa. The Toyota official also told reporters that the export sector has significantly grown since the same time last year, making the automaker's decision a very wise move.

While the Etios was originally created specifically with India's automotive environment in mind, it will receive a few "technical changes"2 in order to support South African requirements. The export variant will be available with a petrol engine only and both the engine and transmission are going to be manufactured at Toyota Kirloskar Auto parts. To provide as many Toyota parts as needed, the plant will increase its production to 100,000 engines per year in 2012 and 240,000 transmissions per year in 2013. The TKM plant in Bidadi, outside Bangalore, will also have to rev up its production engine and start pumping out the vehicles at a better rate. One Toyota statement reported the rate to go from 80,000 units to 120,000 by 2012 and then move to upwards of 210,000 units by the following year.

With an export expansion on the way, Toyota has a lot on its plate. But Toyota of Boardman, located at 8250 Market Street Boardman, OH is extremely confident in the automaker's ability to handle it and find success to boot. Though the Etios and Etios Liva aren't available in the U.S., we have many great new Toyota models that are. If you're interested in a test drive, feel free to contact us. We'd be happy to find a time that works for you.
